Pune Metro Line 3 2026 update: 17 stations cleared, Hinjewadi line awaits opening

Pune Metro Line 3, the elevated Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor, had still not opened to passengers as of 9 October 2026, and no official start date had been announced, The Bridge Chronicle reported. Daily trial runs are under way and work is complete at 17 of the line's 23 stations, which have received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), but the inauguration is still awaited.

Latest confirmed status

  • 23 July 2026: CMRS gave provisional authorisation for passenger operations on the first section of about 13 km, covering 12 stations from Maan (Hinjewadi) to R K Laxman Museum (Balewadi), according to Punekar News.
  • 23 September 2026: CMRS cleared five more stations, taking the total approved for passenger service to 17, Pune Pulse reported.
  • Early October 2026: PMRDA chief engineer Rinaz Pathan said technical checks and related work had been completed, while the timetable and service frequency were still being finalised.

Why the opening is still pending

The line was targeted for earlier openings in 2026 that were missed. In mid-August, a PMRDA official told Punekar News the authority was awaiting a response on the official inauguration. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to inaugurate the line, with the date depending on his schedule, PuneNow reported on 22 September. The same report said the opening could be held up further because the model code of conduct came into force for Maharashtra Legislative Council elections in the Pune division graduates' and teachers' constituencies.

According to The Bridge Chronicle, officials are considering trains about every 10 minutes, instead of the 15 minutes planned for a 12-station service, and a full Maan–Shivajinagar trip is expected to take about 35 minutes. Some work was reported pending at Shivajinagar station, so District Court station may serve as the initial terminus. Neither detail has been officially confirmed.

About the project

The roughly 23 km line is being built for the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture of the Tata Group and Siemens, on a public-private partnership model. It will connect the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar via Balewadi, and interchange with Maha Metro's existing lines at District Court station. Punekar News reported the full corridor is planned for completion by around March 2027.

What it means for residents and homebuyers

Once services begin, the line is expected to give Hinjewadi commuters a rail alternative to road travel between the IT hub and central Pune. Until an official start date is announced, buyers and tenants weighing homes near the corridor should treat any opening claims in project advertising with caution and check status with PMRDA.
