Mumbai Metro Line 9 and Line 2B Phase 1 open, network crosses 100 km in 2026

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 7 April 2026 inaugurated the first phases of Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East to Kashigaon) and Line 2B (Diamond Garden to Mandale), with regular passenger services starting the next day, 8 April. At the event, the Chief Minister said Mumbai now has more than 100 km of operational metro lines across six lines, placing it second in India after Delhi. The two openings bring metro rail for the first time to Mira Road in Thane district and to the Chembur–Mankhurd belt in the eastern suburbs.

What opened

Line 9, Phase 1 is an elevated stretch with four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon. Reported lengths for this section vary between about 4.5 km and 5.6 km across outlets. It runs as an integrated corridor with Line 7, so commuters can travel directly between Gundavali in Andheri East and Kashigaon in Mira-Bhayandar without changing trains. ETV Bharat noted that this technically marks the metro's first service in Thane district.

Line 2B, Phase 1 covers about 5.5 km in the eastern suburbs with five stations: Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd and Mandale. Free Press Journal reported that it runs from around 6 am to 10:30 pm, with a train roughly every nine and a half minutes and 209 services a day. Mankhurd offers a link to the Harbour Line of the suburban railway.

Key numbers

  • Six metro lines are now operational in Mumbai, according to the state government.
  • Line 9 Phase 1 averaged 22,356 riders a day between 8 and 12 April, while Line 2B Phase 1 averaged about 3,885, according to MMRDA data reported by Free Press Journal.
  • The full Line 2B corridor of about 23.6 km, running from Mandale to DN Nagar in Andheri, is expected in 2027, ThePrint reported.
  • Line 9 Phase 2 (Sai Baba Nagar to Subhash Chandra Bose Maidan in Mira-Bhayandar) was reported to be about 96% complete at the time of the inauguration.

What it means for renters and buyers in these suburbs

For households in Mira Road and Kashigaon, the main change is a rail-based alternative to the Western Express Highway for trips towards Dahisar and Andheri. Fadnavis said a journey that currently takes one to two hours could be completed in about 30 minutes. Tenants weighing a move to Mira-Bhayandar can now factor a metro station walk into their commute planning rather than relying only on road transport or the Western Railway suburban line.

On the eastern side, residents of Chembur, Mankhurd and Mandale get a short metro link today, but the larger benefit depends on the rest of Line 2B, which is meant to connect with Kurla, BKC, Bandra and Andheri. Early ridership on this stretch has been modest, which reflects its limited length until more sections open.

Anyone shortlisting a home near these lines can compare listings for rental properties in Mumbai or homes for sale in Mumbai and check the actual walking distance to the nearest station.

What to do next

Before deciding on a home based on metro access, check the station location on the ground, the feeder options from the building to the station, and whether the line serves the commute that matters to you today rather than after future phases open. Construction timelines for remaining phases have shifted before. Owners in these areas who want to reach tenants or buyers looking for metro-linked homes can list a property in Mumbai for free on RealtyMandi.
